In the final the science team from Højstrupskolen's 10th grade class competed against 10.b from Sundeved Efterskole and 9.a from Bedsted Skole.

"The contributions we received for the competition, and the presentations we have seen today in the finals show an interest and potential in science subjects, which I am pleased to see. The idea behind this competition is among other things to enhance students' understanding of the numerous opportunities that the plastics industry offers," says Klaus Hald Winstrøm, Nordic director of Bayer Agency Business.

Chemical and pharmaceutical group Bayer and the Plastics Industry in Denmark had invited all the country's 9th and 10th grade classes to participate in the interdisciplinary competition "Explore the World of Plastics" for the 2009/2010 school year. Physics / chemistry would be the main subject, and then it was up to the participants themselves to decide what other subjects they would involve.

The Højstrup School students had chosen to present their plastic experiments from physics / chemistry classes along with several other topics within plastic in a newspaper and on a website. The students had made the layout themselves and had also applied their Danish class skills to work with the texts.

"I'm really impressed with all the creativity and the level we've seen through the competition. This applies to all three finalists. The students have shown that they really know a lot about physics / chemistry and also know how to communicate their knowledge with humor, dedication and joy," says Peter Skov, director of the Plastics Industry.

"It's crazy that we won. I cannot believe it. I am so proud of these kids. They have worked hard and they really deserve it," says science teacher at Højstrupskolen, Claus Lohmann.

The winning class along with their teachers were awarded a trip to the Bayer headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany. The trip includes a one-day visit to the student lab Baylab Plastics where the students will form their own plastics company and manufacture a plastic product from start to finish. Moreover, the class will be visiting Bayer's modern multimedia center, BayKomm, which shows the latest innovations within health, nutrition, environment and plastics.
