Lyngby - As mother of a diabetic child, Dorthe Lund Pedersen entered into Ascensia's Dream Fund competition with a dream of giving diabetic children connected with Randers Centralsygehus and their parents a break from their everyday. She wished to organise a field trip for the families and so applied for "Ascensia Dream Fund's" half-annual contribution for diabetics of DKK 50,000.

An evening without moderation

The dream started at a family course offered by the Danish Diabetes Association:
"A wise diabetics nurse said: Your children should be allowed all the sweets and candy they can eat twice a year. Namely, at their birthdays and on Christmas Eve," Dorthe Lund Pedersen explains.

In their everyday, children with diabetes need to be very moderate in their consumption of food products containing sugar. So, Dorthe Lund Pedersen wished to arrange for a second Christmas Eve and wanted to offer the children and their parents the possibility of a field trip to Rønbjerg Holiday Centre. "Ascensia Dream Fund" has now made it possible to realize that dream by funding the expenses connected with the trip, and so the children will celebrate the "extra Christmas Eve" on June 9.

Sharing experiences with other diabetic families

The one-day trip will be a chance for the children and their parents to take part in joint activities and share their experiences. As an extra benefit, the children will have the possibility of finding new friends and learn new ways of dealing with their disease. It is about giving them a pleasant time and allowing them an extra day where they can eat goods.

Bayer's local Product Specialist, Inge Yde, presented Dorthe Lund Pedersen with the cheque for DKK 50,000. She received it at the children's outpatient clinic in Randers on the last day of January in presence of about 20 people from the clinic, children with diabetes and their parents, and the regional newspaper.

According to Sales Manager Diabetes Bodil Worm, Dorthe Lund Pedersen is truly a fiery soul. She put a lot of work into gathering votes in the customary internet vote and received about 4000. So, the victory was truly deserved.

Overwhelming interest

After receiving funding to realize the dream, families with diabetic children connected with Randers Centralsygehus have expressed overwhelming interest. According to Inge Yde, as many families have signed up that Dorthe Lund Pedersen needs to find further DKK 35,000 in sponsorship. So, on June 9 there will be many children and their families to enjoy that Dorthe Lund Pedersen's dream came true.

"Ascensia Dream Fund" hands out DKK 50,000 twice a year in Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway in order to fulfil diabetic people's dreams. A panel selects the three best dreams based on the criteria that the dreams are for diabetics, preferably that they have a wide range and that they are exciting. The next deadline for entering a dream into the competition is March 30, 2007. The internet vote takes place between April 15 and May 15, 2007.
